How Does Acne Develop?
Acne is an inflammatory condition of the skin. It is caused by excessive secretion of oil from the sebaceous glands combined with naturally occurring dead skin cells to block the hair follicles. Oil secretions build up beneath the blocked pore and provide a perfect environment for bacteria, P. acnes, to multiply uncontrollably. In response, the skin gets inflamed and produces a visible lesion (acne). The face, chest, back and upper arms are especially prone to acne.

How to Effectively Manage Acne problems?
Your doctor may prescribe products containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) to help in your acne problems. AHAs help to loosen the dead cells that cause the pores to clog. By loosening these intercellular bonds, AHAs reduce the adhesion between epithelial cells in the sebaceous glands. Besides that, it helps to normalize the production of healthy epidermal cells. The result is a clearer looking skin!
As such, chemical skin peeling using appropriate concentrations of glycolic acid (the smallest AHA in existence) could reduce inflammation of the acne-prone skin and improve mild acne scar lesions. However, it is very important that you let the doctor assess your acne problem to determine whether your skin is suitable for chemical peeling.
Good Skincare Hygiene and Habits
Besides using the medications prescribed by the doctor to treat your acne problems, you should also exercise good skincare hygiene and habits to avoid worsening the condition. These are some measures you can take to prevent your acne problems from worsening:
 |
| • |
Clean your skin gently with a suitable cleanser twice a day. Preferably use a product that contains antiseptic, like AHA Facial Wash for Oily and Acne-Prone Skin. Do not scrub you skin excessively using strong detergent soaps as this could worsen your acne problem. |
 |
| • |
Avoid frequent rubbing or touching of acne-prone skin, as this could introduce and encourage the growth of bacteria within the pores and hair follicles of the skin. |
 |
| • |
Do not squeeze, pick, scratch, or rub your skin. Scars may form if you squeeze pimples. Wash your hands more frequently and avoid putting your fingers and hands to your face unnecessarily. Do not rest your face on your hands while you read, study, or watch TV. |
 |
| • |
Avoid suntanning. The sun can seriously damage skin, promote premature aging of skin, and may cause skin cancer. Furthermore, many of the medications used to treat acne also make a person more prone to sunburn. |
 |
| • |
All cosmetics, such as foundation, blush, eye shadow, and moisturizers, should be oil free or water based. It is also advisable not to use cosmetics too heavily or too often. |
 |
| • |
Avoid stress. |
