There’s no question about it! Sunlight is your skin’s worst enemy.
The dreaded UVA and UVB rays promote photoaging. Signs of photoaging includes wrinkles, sagging, roughness, loss of lusture, and age spots. Excessive exposure to the sun can cause precancerous lesions such as solar keratosis, and cancerous lesions such as squamous cell carinoma and melanoma. Additionally, sun damage may enlarge pores and can aggravate acne.
Ways to protect your skin?
Firstly, sunscreen should be started right away. Many people initially deny that they are sun-exposed and think that they are spared. This wrong perception has to be corrected even before any other treatment can be implemented. A walk in the park during the day, hanging out the clothes, working by an unshielded window or long hours in the car are examples of activities that are easily overlooked. Some practical advise with regards to sun protection include the following:
 |
| • |
Stay out of the sun between 9am and 4pm as much as possible. |
| • |
Adequate covering for the arms and legs when outdoor, and a wide brimmed hat for the face and scalp. |
| • |
Choose a sunscreen that is broad spectrum (protects skin from both UVA & UVB rays) |
| • |
Daily use of an appropriate sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or more. |
| • |
Always remember to reapply sunscreens regularly about every three to four hours. |
